Fun, Meaningful Easter & Spring Family Activities

Nothing feels better than opening your windows and letting in that fresh, spring breeze throughout your house. I know for me that is one of the first signs of the transition from winter to spring that brings a smile to my face.

Each season has its benefits that are important for us to understand, embrace, and utilize in our lives. With that being said, spring in particular is a time for us to renew and refresh, our homes, ourselves, and time spent with loved ones.

In this article, I’ll be going over some fun, meaningful Easter & spring activity ideas to help you in spending quality time with your family.

Outdoor Activities

1. Have a Picnic

With each of these activities, I want to first point out that all of these including the preparation behind them should be a family affair. Time put into an activity is just as important in bringing a family closer together and providing opportunities to teach as the activity itself. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Going on a picnic can be a great way to welcome spring and spend some much-needed time outdoors as a family, whether in a community park or your own front or backyard.

Take the time as a family to choose the menu, prep the food, and choose the favored location. Allowing everyone the opportunity to be involved can increase personal confidence and increase excitement towards the time spent together.

2. Hike or Go for a Walk

One goal my husband and I have this year is to go on family walks a few times a week and go on a family or duo hike at least once a week once the weather and terrain permit.

Spending time in nature as a family can increase positive mental health, increase feelings of clarity of mind and gratitude, strengthen bonds as a family, and helps in physical well-being specifically in blood pressure, decrease tension in joints and muscles, increase heart and lung health, and other countless benefits.

Every time we find ourselves outdoors, it gives my husband and I a beautiful, open setting to talk or just enjoy being in each other’s company, and allows us to encourage our toddler’s curiosity, physical health, and imagination. Being outdoors is certainly one of our favorite family activities!

3. Play in a Local Park, Adults Included

At the end of most of our walks, my husband and I always are sure to spend some time in a local park with our toddler, specifically on the swings, his absolute favorite!

Often when we think of the activity of playing at a playground, as adults we initially see it as a time to let the kids get some energy out of their systems and allow us some time on our own. But then we would be missing out on some fantastic one-on-one opportunities to bond and initiate trust, love, and memories as a family.

Individual play is indeed important for kids to take part in, but we are here for important family activities, therefore, parents, get on a swing beside your kiddo, make a family train going down the slide, have a competition to see who can swing the farthest on the monkey bars, let your own inner child come out and allow for some much-needed laughs and cherished time had by all.

4. Cloud/Sky-Watch

Along with taking it slow and easy, yet spending some quality time as a family is cloud-watching or just gazing up at the sky.

Our lives are so demanding, distracting, and so fast-paced, that we would do well to slow down and enjoy the simpler things in life together.

No phones, no distractions, just a few minutes even of uninterrupted time in the grass or on an outdoor chair letting our minds unwind, being open to conversations that may need to be had, and just being together outdoors with no rush whatsoever.

5. Read Outside Together

Not every activity needs to be high energy driven nor does it need to be overly complicated. Some of my favorite memories growing up took no time or a lot of effort, it was simply in the act of being together that made the time worthwhile.

As the weather becomes more beautiful to take part in, set up a couple of blankets, go under your favorite tree whether in your front or backyard or over at a family favorite park and enjoy the glories of nature as you read either as a group or individually.

There is something so enlightening, relaxing, and calming as you read outdoors under the sun.

6. Boat/Stick Racing

Going right along with simple yet silly fun, boat or stick racing is up there for spring activities. I’ll be honest, I never would have thought much of this activity, let alone at all, but the last few months, my son and I have been watching a kids’ show where this is one of the characters’ favorite activities.

I remember sitting and wondering what the appeal was until I thought of the competitive yet silly nature of such an activity and wanted to take part.

Whether you simply take part in the act of racing or step up the fun and competition and make the finding of a stick and creating a boat part of the fun, it could make for an unexpected, good time had by all.

7. Research Into What’s Happening Around You

You’ll be surprised what all is happening in your own backyard so to speak all year long.

This spring season, take the time with your family to see what activities and events are coming up in your community or city group pages on social media and take part in them.

For instance, in our area, the local fire station puts on a yearly family Easter egg hunt and an array of other activities to follow, it’s fun to watch the kiddos participate and even the adults get sincerely roped into the fun to be had in the moment. A little research will add to your family’s time together and a greater appreciation for the area you live in.

8. Thrift Shop

Whether for added decor for the season, funky items for an activity, or as a fun family hobby, thrift shopping can make for a fun activity.

I enjoy letting my mind run wild with the possibilities of how a piece can be used in my home, finding treasures along the way, and my husband and I linking eyes as we find a steal deal on an item that far surpasses our expectations.

9. Planning and Prepping for Family Garden

One thing that I always looked forward to with my family at this time of year, was dreaming up and preparing for the joys to come with our family garden. We planted everything from rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries, potatoes, onion, to carrots, beans, peas, an array of flowers, and so forth.

Making, caring for, and helping to create the growth of a garden takes great time, effort, and work, to say the least, but is beyond satisfying especially when it comes to enjoying the fruits of our labor.

Whether you have a garden, a simple herb garden, or even any lawn care or outside of the home needs to be taken care of, make it a family affair to take pride, responsibility in, and even joy in caring for growing living things to make our homes beautiful and vibrant.

10. Fire Gathering

There is something to be said in the act of gathering with loved ones and making a fire to talk around, eat, pause, and celebrate.

Take the time as the spring season begins to celebrate it’s coming about with s’mores, a tin foil meal or hot dogs, and simply talk and sing, or play games or sports as a family. Having a fire can rekindle hopes for the future and joy in the present.

11. Fly a Kite

I feel that one of the great wonders and joys of spring is having the ability to breathe for the first time and be reminded of the need to take in all that life has to offer, as well as to embrace simple living.

Another simple activity is flying a kite under an open blue sky with fluffy clouds on top of a hill in a school field. Painting such a picture makes me think of myself as a young girl in my elementary school field watching that multi-colored kite soar along with my young heart.

Flying a kite as a family will be a meaningful, thoughtful time under the cloud-filled sky allowing time to pass and a time to draw closer together to take place.

12. Bike-Riding

Once the weather permits and the sidewalks are cleared, I love getting out my bike and going on a ride around the city. Exercising and sight-seeing in such a way is invigorating and a grand adventure.

One way that my family growing up would step up this activity would be to either ride our bikes to a local park and have a picnic or do a fun activity called meal hopping. You would start off with having an appetizer at one place, then the main meal, and then the dessert, riding your bike from one location to the next.

Bike riding alone is a great, fun family activity but as my family did, you can mix it up with other activities to make for great memories and happy, full bellies along the way.

Indoor Activities

1. Paint eggs

Of course, this wouldn’t be a complete list of Easter, spring activities if I didn’t include painting eggs. Even as a teenager I enjoyed taking part in this activity with a few of my close friends and we had an absolute ball!

Whether you want to simply use singular colors, designs with crayons, or simply let your creative juices run amuck, put on a fun playlist and enjoy the experience of painting eggs alongside loved ones.

2. Paint Rocks

Along with painting eggs, don’t just stop there but grab a few rocks from around your neighborhood or backyard and paint them.

I’ve seen some fun, creative ideas all over Pinterest from creating a theme of favorite cartoon characters, to animals or birds, to holiday theme rock collections that families have then placed in their flower bed, as part of their rock-way, or garden, it adds a personal touch to your outdoor space and makes for a fun-filled time for the whole family to enjoy.

3. Make Easter Cookies

Whether you opt for the classic holiday-themed Pillsbury cookies that come out during Christmas with the reindeer and Santa’s, the Halloween ones with the pumpkins, or now with the Easter-themed cookies with the chicks or bunnies, or creating chocolate chip cookies, or another family favorite, take the time to bake as a family.

Break out the spring-colored sprinkles, some frosting for extra texture and sugar goodness, and maybe a few chocolate eggs to make it an all-out Easter bake-athon.

Be sure to make enough to snack on during a family movie night, family readathon, or half to eat together and the other half to give to someone else, cause who couldn’t use a cookie, or five?

4. Make Cards or Pictures to Give

As you spend time as a family being creative and creating memories together, take it a step further and use it as an opportunity to serve and lift others’ spirits.

Think of a few people near or far that could use a pick-me-up, a friendly reminder that they’re thought of and loved, and with those people in mind, make some fun, uplifting, personalized cards and/or pictures to send their way.

A simple act of service can go a long way to brighten a person’s day or lift a person’s spirits to greater heights. You never know what your act of kindness can do towards another, so take part in it as a family.

5. Indoor Reading Picnic

Now not every day of spring is sunshine and blue skies, there are plenty of cloudy, rainy days as well. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t fun to be had or a lack of picnics to take part in.

If rain is coming down on your picnic plans, take out a couple picnic appropriate blankets to eat on, make some sandwiches and some family favorite snacks, eat, and pick a few books to read together.

You could even go a step further and invite a few furry friends along by making it an indoor teddy bear picnic by serving your teddy bear friends a snack or two, and cuddling up with them as storytime ensues.

6. Spring Clean

It may seem almost odd to have this down as a fun or meaningful activity, but spring cleaning I assure you can be both if done the right way.

Often anyone hears the word clean, and you either are met with moans and eyes rolling or sleeves rolled up and a determined attitude. Spring cleaning around the home should be a family affair, not a one-person showdown, aka Mom.

Assign each family member a task that they either enjoy or are good at, drive them to open windows, put on music to work to, and take pride in creating a clean, decluttered, organized home that they can find peace and serenity in as well.

You can even take it a step further with a reward or an incentive if you will in mind that’ll drive everyone to work together. Whether that’s with the promise of getting ice cream and going for a family drive or walk, a special, all-out movie night, ordering in from your family’s favorite pizza joint, whatever the reward of your choice may be, in the end, you’ll be rewarded with a functioning, clean home you can breathe in, and a fun outcome your family can enjoy.

7. Plastic Easter Egg Advent Calendar

During the Easter season, my Mom created and shared this creative plastic Easter egg advent calendar lasting 12 days long, starting a couple of days before Passover until Easter Monday.

The countdown was to help remind us as a family and instill in us kids the importance of the events surrounding the events around Jesus’s mission, sacrifice, and glorious resurrection. Each egg had a simple item and a scripture talking about what happened that day.

Some other ideas that I’ve heard others do are in each egg you write down something you’ll pray for as a family, write down something you’ll do that day as a family, or a random act of kindness you can do as a family. You’ll be amazed at the ideas that your family will come up with and doing so together will make the Easter season that much more meaningful and not just filled with endless chocolate, not that there’s anything wrong with that 😉

8. Easter Egg Puzzle

A cool new idea that I’d like to try out is as a fun activity or to add into your kiddos Easter baskets is to get them a puzzle and add the pieces into plastic Easter eggs, depending on how big the puzzle you can either put each individual piece in an egg or multiple pieces in an egg.

This adds an unexpected, fun element to the putting together of the puzzle. Also, you could choose a puzzle with a spring or Easter theme to add to the event.

9. Create a Family Mailbox

Whether as a way to show added appreciation towards one another, to increase unity, or to simply boost morale and let love abound in your home, create a family mailbox.

You can either make one altogether with paper, cardboard, or wood personalized with everyone’s handprints *insert beloved Pixar’s Up moment*, or buy or thrift one together, you can then initiate it with a couple of simple, meaningful expressions of love towards each member of your family. Encourage everyone to take part with either the theme of one thing you appreciate about each other, a favorite memory, two things that the other person is good at, etc., or a full-out letter relaying your thanks and love towards each other.

You’ll be amazed at how much the very environment of your home will shift, brighten, and become full with increased understanding, love, and everyone will feel a greater sense of being seen and of greater worth.

10. Make Blanket Nests

This simple activity has quickly become a favorite of my toddlers’, where we simply grab an armful of blankets from throughout the house, dump them in the middle of our living room, and make a nest of sorts.

From there we either fall into them over and over again giggling uncontrollably, cuddle, have a tickle fight, just stare at the ceiling, watch a movie, or read together. The act of creating this nest of blankets becomes a simple, magical area of play and connection between my toddler and me, that I know can be created in your own home with your loved ones that help you in becoming truly present with one another if given the chance.

11. Finger Painting

Crack open the washable, vibrant paint, spread out the paper across the grass in your yard or over the kitchen table, roll up your sleeves, and let the fun begin as you finger-paint as a family.

This messy activity can make for laughs galore and funky creations by all involved, that it would be a shame to not take part in. Let go of your inhibitions and let your inner child come to play alongside your kiddos. It’ll make for a relaxed, silly activity that you’ll want to do again and again.

12. Fondue Party

As a salute to the coming of the beautiful spring season to come, celebrate with food by having a fondue party together.

Often fondue night can be seen as a date night or New Year’s Eve activity, but any excuse to celebrate with food is a reason to do it with those you love. So melt that oil, cheese, and chocolate, cut up your favorite meat, fruit, veggies, you name it, and gather the family around for some yummy food and quality time together to celebrate the season before and the season to come.

From One Season to the Next

As the days grow longer, the sun shines brighter, and the weather warms up, don’t let this season pass you by without making extra family time a priority.

Family time doesn’t ever have to be complicated, foreign, or overwhelming. Taking a few of your family’s favorite things paired with one or a few of the listed activities can make for great memories, much-needed bonding time, and could even spark some long-term family traditions here on out.

As L.M. Montgomery simply put it, “that is one good thing about this world…there are always sure to be more springs.” Allow this spring to add more to your life, more beauty, more time, more joy, and more revival for the soul, for you, and every member of your family.

Now I’d love to hear from you, what is one thing you look forward to in the spring?
